Day-trip from Dallas for $100

Let’s just jump straight into it.

Most normal people don’t have a lot of time off. We have bills to pay, shit to do and all that. RIGHT. We know. We work 7 days a week most times, if we’re being crystal here. This is where blogs like this come in handy. You found yourself here, curious about how to spend $100 or less, on a day trip you can actually enjoy. And I don’t mean, go out to a nice restaurant and a stroll for ice-cream in the park. That’s cool too, but that’s not exactly where our head is with this one. I mean wake up early in the morning, pack a backpack of water and be prepared to spend about fifteen hours of your day, driving, hiking, climbing, and checking out some of the coolest attractions between Dallas, Texas and Wilburn, Oklahoma. Some unknown cool kid once said, “time flies when you’re having fun!” If you’re interested, I’ll get super into detail, keep reading. If not, fuck it then, just look at the pictures and you decide if you want to hop in your ride and do something.

Understanding the time it takes.

Now, When I say fifteen hours, I’m including all the drive time, stop time, and bullshitting time that WE needed. Adjust this time as you chose. Let’s break this down a bit. Pay attention. There’s a lot of shit going on and I don’t want to lose you. Oh, it’s probably important that you know, this little adventure included three folks and a pup. It’s a party! Just one day before this road trip, we all realized we would have just one day to get out and do something. Literally twenty-four hours. We immediately pulled up Le Google, and searched for all parks and things within a four hour radius of Dallas. Oh and on top of that, we’re three broke bitches. How far could we REALLY go? If you’re from Texas, you know it is very big and there are quite a bit of miles from one edge to the other. After an hour or two of research, we found that we’re just 3 1/2 hours from the beautiful Wilburn, Oklahoma. (Remember, that’s 3 1/2 there and 3 1/2 back.) Robber’s Cave State Park to be exact. You would be happy to know that this park is free to the public, so you can take the whole family without worrying about too much on entry fees. This trip to the park was exciting enough to get Mary and I extra hype…ready to hop in the car as soon as possible. This was the destination of choice for our 4th of July! We then had this bright idea to look up all the places a long our route, that we’re FREE to see, because again, broke as broke. Our best-friend was https://www.roadsideamerica.com/location/ . They provide you with info to some of the weirdest shit on your route. FREE FREE. This is what we came up with:

Day trip route

The Stops

What you need:

  • Be well rested
  • Gas
  • Your car or a friend’s car
  • Gas (We needed about $35 for one full tank)
  • Time
  • Backpack
  • Water (We had about 8 bottles total from home.)
  • salty snacks (granola bars, peanuts, trail mix)
  • road trip music for OFFLINE listening
  • phone/camera for memories!

As you can see, we spent $60 for gas. We were only left with $40 bucks. We ate, twice. I’m not TELLING YOU to go to eat McDonald’s for breakfast, but we ate McDonald’s for breakfast. I don’t suggest going hiking on an empty stomach. Fuck around and pass out real quick! No one needs that okay? After our hike, we stopped and grabbed something else. I don’t remember what, but it was cheap too. LOL! If you have extra cash, just take it so you can get souvenirs at the little gift shop in the park. 🙂 (P.s. An hour later, and Mary reminded me that it was Sonic. LMAO)
